About MdGenr / the writing desk
MdGenr is a small, independent project. A Markdown editor with live preview is the whole of what we do here: it renders Markdown to typeset HTML as you type, with a table of contents, syntax highlighting, mermaid diagrams and export to HTML, PDF or Markdown. There is no account to create, no email to hand over, and no paywall hiding behind the third advert.
Why MdGenr exists
Search for developer tools and you will mostly find pages that bury a single calculation under cookie walls, newsletter modals and three paragraphs of filler. We built MdGenr as the opposite: one focused tool that renders Markdown to typeset HTML as you type, with a table of contents, syntax highlighting, mermaid diagrams and export to HTML, PDF or Markdown, and nothing between you and the answer. Keeping it that narrow is what makes it fast, and what makes it honest about how the result is produced.
How it works
The whole calculation is client-side JavaScript. What happens is this: it parses the Markdown to an abstract syntax tree and renders it in the preview pane on each keystroke, so the preview and the exported file come from the same parse rather than two separate renderers. Because the method is published here, any disagreement you find can be traced to a particular step instead of being blamed on a black box.
Your data stays here
The Markdown you write never leaves your browser. There is no backend that receives it, no database that stores it, and no advertiser that sees it — so you can load the page, disconnect from the internet, and the tool keeps working.
Who this is for
- developers who need an answer between two builds.
- engineers verifying output before it is committed.
- anyone who values a tool that needs no account.
How this stays free
There is no charge to use MdGenr. The costs are covered by advertising, which stays out of the way of the tool itself and has no access to your input. If an advert ever interferes with the page, tell us and we will look at it.
